Villa Albertine San Francisco international residency: Hicham Berrada

  • Villa Albertine San Francisco San Francisco, CA United States (map)

Born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1986, Hicham Berrada is a laboratory technician and artist who incorporates chemical processes to create photography, performances poetry, and science.

In 2014, he was a resident at the Villa Medicis in Rome and worked with the Centquatre in Paris.

By creating videos, installations and performances based on a combination of intuition and knowledge, science and poetry, Berrada explores the relationship between nature, and living species.

Rather than simply representing forms, Berrada proposes to reveal them with great dedicacy through chemical-based panels and drawings.

At Villa Albertine San Francisco, Berrada wishes to pursue and renew the opera Des Canyons aux étoiles composed during Olivier Messian's journey in Utah in the 1970s. His project consists of transforming Messian's musical work into imagery from his own journey through several national parks in the United States. This interplay between works will allow Berrada to renew and diversify the artistic production to align with the timely theme of environmental crisis.
