Guided Tour: Museums in Cinema at BAMPFAJuly 6, 2016 - August 31, 2016

Given the dual nature of BAMPFA, a museum and a cinematheque in one, perhaps planning a series of films looking at museums was inevitable. Aptly, several of the films in the series detail the process and challenges of museum building projects, tracing the arc from the ideal to the real through observing planning meetings and budget discussions and venturing behind the scenes where conservators and curators make decisions about the preservation, selection, and presentation of art and other cultural objects.

Hitchcock/TruffautJuly 14, 2016 - August 28, 2016

Hitchcock/Truffaut provides an engaging look at one of the most beloved film books of all time. Jean Epstein, more than any other filmmaker in the interwar period, contributed to the complex debates on the nature and influence of cinema in his time. The films in this series represent the full range of his investment in revolutionary forms of cinema, equally employing narrative, documentary, and experimental elements to elaborate his ideas.

My Golden YearsApril 8, 2016

Adolescent love in all its ardor is the ostensible subject of Arnaud Desplechin’s “My Golden Days,” but its real subject is moviemaking itself. The film is an arty grab bag of lifts and homages drawn from French films, most pointedly director François Truffaut’s. It’s the kind of movie that probably appeals best to film critics, who can congratulate each other for spotting all the “in” references
